National Water Security Plan launched as a goal of the Water Infrastructure area of the Ministry of Regional Development-MDR

“Almost 55 million people in urban areas must be at water risk in 2035, without sufficient availability of water to fully meet their demands, if nothing is done before then. To alleviate the problem, 99 interventions were identified, such as dams, water mains, canals and hydrographic basin integration axes that allow for an increase in supply in critical areas. These solutions, however, will require investments of R$ 27.5 billion over the next 15 years.” Thus began the article published in Valor Econômico, on 10/04/2019, based on the National Water Safety Plan -PNSH, prepared by ENGECORPS for the National Water Agency, now linked to the Ministry of Regional Development-MDR.

Carried out in an unprecedented and innovative way, the PNSH is an executive instrument for decision-making by the federal government. Based on guidelines and criteria arising from the Water Security concept, the PNSH ensures Brazil an integrated and consistent planning of water infrastructure with a strategic nature and regional relevance, until 2035, to reduce the impacts of droughts and floods. In addition to the works, additional studies and projects necessary to make them feasible are also identified, as well as knowledge gaps in areas of low water security, for which specific actions were proposed.
